It's become chic to hate Taylor Swift.
Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson has called her music horrible. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey mocked her love life at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. She's been name-checked in a negative context by Jay-Z on "The Great Gatsby" soundtrack. And Kanye West kicked it all off by dissing her in front of the entire audience at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when he stormed the stage in protest while she was accepting an award.
Why all the hate?
Perhaps it's because Swift is so successful at age 23. She's got seven Grammys. She's the only female artist in music history to twice have an album hit 1 million in first-week sales. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. And her current tour, which touches down in Portland Friday with a sold-out Moda Center show, is one of the year's hottest concert tickets.
And Swift has done all of it without having to latch onto a Kardashian to keep her name in the headlines.
So really, what's not to like? Here are seven reasons to stop hating and love Taylor Swift:
Her songs are relatable: Swift writes her songs and lyrics, drawing from her own experiences as a self-described awkward teenager. While many of her songs focus on romance, she also tackles tough subjects like bullying and eating disorders. And she does it with a dynamic voice and catchy melodies.
She really believes in love: "Love is a tricky business. But if it wasn't, I wouldn't be so enthralled with it," she wrote in 2009. "Even though there's no way to feel like I'm an expert at it, it's worth writing songs about -- more than anything else I've ever experienced in my life."
She doesn't take a break-up sitting down: And love is, indeed, tricky business. Over the years, she's been romantically linked with singers Harry Styles, John Mayer and Joe Jonas, actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Lautner, and Kennedy heir Conor Kennedy. When some of those romances have ended in heartbreak, they became the inspiration for defiant break-up songs ("Back to December," "Dear John," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"). For Swift, it's the only way to cope with heartbreak: "There are two ways you can go with pain: You can let it destroy you or you can use it as fuel to drive you," she says. Prospective boyfriends, take note.
She's comfortable in her own skin: Swift has many talents, but dancing isn't one of them. And yet she does it anyway, moving around the stage the way you might dance when nobody is watching. It's disarming and adorable.
She's got good fashion sense: While she gets the occasional barb on TV's "Fashion Police" for pursuing similar red-carpet looks, when she gets it right, Swift really gets it right. At the Golden Globes this year, she wore a black sleeveless gown from Donna Karan that left host Joan Rivers nearly speechless: "She's a movie star!"
Her fans totally dig her: Swift's fans are the most-devoted pop music has seen since the bizarre obsession with Clay Aiken a decade ago. And they call themselves "Swifties," which is way cooler than "Claymates" ever was.
The Westboro Baptist Church hates her: That's the Topeka, Kan.-based hate group known for protesting soldiers' funerals. Earlier this month, they picketed her concert in Kansas City with signs that were anything but gentle. Hey, if those creeps don't like her, she must be doing something right.

I heard Red three times today on the radio, and I barely listened to the radio.
It sounded LOVELY!

Bye.
On the bright side, at least it won't have to go against "Skyfall" at the grammys.

I just love the piano chords in Rih's "Stay" so much you guys. I've had a cover version of the instrumental in Spotify on repeat for the last day.
When will Taylor get a ballad to smash like that?

And yay! I made it through my first teaching week in China!

You and I are a story
That never gets told
If what you are is
A daydream I never get to hold
Atleast you'll know
You're beautiful, every little piece love

I know! Although the production sounds happy the message of the song is sad and filled with longing. I love it.

I feel like some parts from that write-up were kind of shady like:
Quote:
“It’s very clean and clear, with no surprises,” he says. “With the difference between verse, chorus and bridge, she’s very clear, by the book.”
|
Quote:
“We tend to start writing songs simply, staying in key,” he says. “She does too.

When Taylor Swift’s fans sweep into the Dome on Saturday night, it’ll be for a few good reasons – simple songs, heartfelt stories, and language even a parent can love.

Her chords and harmonic progressions are always inside the box.

It was obviously unintentional, but I still find it to be quite funny. It seems like they are implying that She plays it safe all the time and doesn't think outside of the box.

I think that's mostly true (with some exceptions, like SOG, Enchanted, etc.). I think of it as traditional songwriting and that's why she gets compared to the 60's songwriters who understood that songwriting is a craft and it requires structure. IMO, the reason no Taylor song is bad is that even if a song isn't inspired, it still follows the rules of good songwriting and knows when to bring the chorus in, to take things up a notch during the bridge and so on. There's a tried-and-true formula for what humans respond best to in songs that she understands very well. And that makes the times she does something different much sweeter, because it's genuinely surprising.
If I give that guy the benefit of the doubt, I think that was what he was trying to get across, but I've noticed that some adult fans of Taylor like to play her talent down, make it sound simple instead of highly skilled because they don't want to sound like full-on stans. They'll say, "Oh, her songs are just really catchy!" when you know they listen to YBWM and weep for their unrequited love.

LOL I did say that we probably wouldn't get STF until the film's theatrical release... Which happens to be the same week as a certain someone releases an album.

Accept this
Taylor shaded Katy on Brave performance
Who You Love makes Taylor jealous because she didn't get that much part in Half of My Heart like Katy got
And Katy copied her release date
She's gonna murder Katy with STF
