'One Direction: This Is Us' has topped the US box office.
The film - which documents the meteoric rise to fame of the boy band, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - took $17 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend, pushing out Lee Daniels' 'The Butler' following the motion picture's two-week run at the top.
Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures' President of Worldwide Distribution, said: ''We are thrilled with our result. It exceeded our expectations not only domestically, but everywhere, worldwide.''
The concert movie's estimated $17 million in ticket sales do not include projected takings for US Labour Day today (02.09.13), while 'The Butler' generated $14.7 million from Friday to Sunday and Jennifer Aniston's latest film 'We're the Millers' was in third with $12.6 million.
'This Is Us', which is directed by Morgan Spurlock, is expected to fall just short of the estimated $22 million in takings over America's holiday weekend.
Sony's One Direction: This Is Us overpowered the competition at the Friday box office in grossing a strong $8.9 million and receiving an A CinemaScore.
Restoring luster to the concert documentary genre, One Direction could gross between $22 million and $25 million for the four-day Labor Day weekend, the best showing of all time for the holiday stretch after the $30.6 million earned by Halloween in 2007.
