She's not a legend or anything and she's not very talented to start, so it's not like she can really recover from this in time. At least when Britney had a disastrous performance, she was already a pop legend by that time and wasn't doing it on purpose.

Speaking from experience (

) Nicki pulled a similar thing accidentally with her Grammy performance last year then Starships (the next day) shot up the charts and iTunes for that time being. Granted, the effects were felt after when the whole era became a slight mess and the lukewarm album reviews rolled in.
It seems like Miley's on top now, but once things cool down, everyone will start seeing the real effects of her actions now, whether it be bad album sales, bad album reviews, blacklisted from endorsements, photoshoots, no one caring about her follow up album, immense amounts of hate, etc.
