Because north americans see spanish as a language for maids and basic people, most people would like to learn French or Italian because they come from Europe and somehow Europe is more interesting that South America.

Cheap language

At my HS most people took spanish because they thought it would be easy and they ended up failing anways. I even took it in HS and I'm fluent in spanish but because I was taking the AP class for credit.

I live in Texas and it seems like a lot of people feel that way. I guess because there are SO many hispanics in Texas, it's a language we hear everyday constantly so it's not really interesting to people anymore. Most of the kids in my school wanted to other languages like French too.

But the funny part is, people forget that Spanish doesn't originate in South America. Spanish is from Spain, a EUROPEAN, lily-white Anglo-Saxon country.
