Yeah, I would imagine the "small talk" aspect would be a major reason [in addition to them killing you of course] for not picking up a hitchhiker. I, for one, would die making conversation with a complete stranger with whom I really didn't want to pick up in the first place.
"Hey, so how's hitchhiking going for ya'?"
