I was listening to When You Believe and thought that it would have sounded even more amazing if it had been recorded around 1990. I mean, Whitney's vocals were much more powerful than in 1998 (the year it was actually recorded, correct me if I'm wrong) and Mariah sounded even better in 1990 as far as I'm concerned*. I really like the song, but Whitney's vocals were so perfect in the 80's and early 90's that I can't help but imagine her early angelic tone whenever I hear the song. RIP Whitney. Also, I'm pretty sure Whitney recorded a song with MJ, will we ever get to heart the song? I remember watching a video where Mariah said it would have sounded amazing, so maybe they did not record the song, I'm not that sure anymore. Can anyone enlighten me about it? Is there a Whitney Base?
I agree. It's a beautiful duet, but often when I listen to it I wonder how it would be if recorded in the singers' primes. Though I suppose part of the magic was that they were supposed rivals and already legends in their own right, and it wouldn't have been as stunning a collaboration if they had done it early in Mariah's career.
And Michael wanted a duet with Whitney, but Whitney's label/Clive turned it down because he thought Whitney would be overexposed. Never fails to get me steaming. And yet he approved an an embarrassing Aretha/Whitney duet with one of the cheesiest songs in both of their catalogs, with Aretha well out of her prime. Clive ain't ****.
