There was something else going on. Don't get me wrong, sleep deprivation causes your immune system to weaken, your body to stop metabolizing nutrients effectively such as glucose, mental disorders, and all other types of complications, but for him to die just after 3 days seems a bit off. This may be because I'm in college and during Mid-Terms/Finals I've gone like 3 or 4 days without sleep and have been fine. In fact, many college students do it and unless undernourishment/ dehydration or pre-existing health problems affect them then they're fine. This sad though.

What's really detrimental is the lack of REM sleep because so many important bodily functions happen during that sleep period which accounts for around 20% of the sleep cycle.

And no you cannot die from sleep deprivation. Hell you dont start seeing complications (like hallucination) until 5 days without sleep (if you make it that long without your body forcing you to sleep). Whatever he was taking to keep him up is what killed him.

It can kill you, but like I said either the person isn't nourishing his body properly, has a pre-existing condition, or they are resorting to some extreme methods such as drugs to stay away which will eventually resort in a heart attack after abuse. Other than that, it usually takes a long, drawn out period of sleep deprivation for a person to succumb to it and when I say long I mean weeks.

If you interview 10 successful persons in ten different fields and ask them if there were times they went days without sleep to get the position where theyre at, EVERY last one of them will tell you yes.
Ever heard the term, "you reap what you sow?" Thats pretty much the case in point here.

The persons who are winning put work in and made sacrifices, and one of those sacrifices was a proper rest, especially in a highly competitive environment like finance. Its unfortunate that the guy lost his life, but that's just the way it is.

yep. no company will force these interns to work non-stop. it's one of those things where you CAN go sleep if you need to, but while youre sleeping your competition could be getting more work accomplished. Its that fear that drives people to these kinds of extremes. Saw it often during my internships.

I get that you have to put hard work into things and can't always take shortcuts, however if your job causes you to lose sleep multiple times a week while you fear being fired or not being noticed, then it's not worth it. What's the point of being successful if you don't have a life to enjoy it. I'm an Engineering major and usually, I find that people who spend obnoxious hours on studying tend to get good grades, but don't usually see "the whole picture". They constantly worry about the little things, impeding their learning of the actual subject.

I think it's similar in work. Sometimes, people spend way too much time doing unnecessary things not focusing on the big picture just to impress their supervisors who probably don't really notice, especially if you're an intern. Sometimes you have to spend a lot of hours in your career, but not at a constant, intense level.

i did that too for 2 days maximum though... which is 48 hours...

If you do stuff like this for weeks; going days without sleep, then sleeping a little again, your body will be completely exhausted, so he did not die because of those particular 72 hours but because of the weeks before.
