I think most artists (specially pop artists) start as puppets and then they gain control over what their image/music will be but still they don't usually have the final word about everything, unless they are completely independent like Radiohead.

Alanis Morissette started making dance music in the early 90's, after that her music made a drastic change to what she really wanted to create.

Every artist is a label puppet from the Mariah Careys to the Azealia to the M.I.A.s to the Jojos Money makes the world go round. Its all about image. Britney and Rihanna don't talk about themselves or aren't phoney so they're labelled as puppets. Rih writes on her albums and so does Britney. They're just more about the music. You'll never hear Rih or Brit talking about their creative process and how they're such artists because they're more down to earth.
