Discussion: The Homeschool Thread

So I was curious to know if any other fellow ATRLer's are homeschooled?

If so than feel free to use this thread as an outlet to share your experiences, frustrations, likes, dislikes etc. And even if you're not homeschooled, but are interested in it this is a great way to get a first hand account from other people who are homeschooled students.

Also if you're new to it (like me) you can also share your thoughts on how you feel about homeschooling vs. public schooling and compare the pros and cons to see which one you think is better.

Hopefully this thread can be helpful and insightful.

Getting homeschooled is very hard in this country and there are only about 1000 people here who are getting homeschooled (many of them illegal). I think it's not something good because the social aspect of school is very important.

I'm not in homeschool anymore but I was.

It was bad for me. I had no interaction with other people my age and it wasn't easy to follow. You kind of have this freedom to do whatever you want all day rather than doing assignments so there isn't much discipline (for lack of a better word) to it. That's just my experience though.

I spent the last 12 years of my life in Africa so I was homeschooled. I had a great life, but then my mom got offered tenure at Northwestern University, so it was goodbye Africa and hello high school.

It's been tough trying to fit in

Well that sucks. What country are you from? In the U.S. it's a little bit different homeschooling can vary depending on the state you live in. For example I live in California so everything I do is online (which I think applies to all other states too I'm not sure) and all my material for Math, History, Science, and English are sent to me for free. And they will provide the student with a desktop if needed so thats always a plus. But yeah the social aspect of school is very true but for most of my life I've moved a lot so I never had long-term childhood friends, but I'm also not unsociable either. I mean theres obvious pros and cons, but the biggest one thats mainly discussed is how can someone who's homeschooled have a social life?

Aww thats so sad to hear. It must be hard because not only did you have to leave the country you were born, and raised in for most of your life but theres also a big change of culture. If you don't mind me asking what's the hardest part about fitting in for you? Do you think its because you were homeschooled or does it have to do with something else?

omg I was homeschooled too sis

I never knew any who were before
But I was homeschooled halfway thru 7th grade after my dad passed away

It can be hard, I lost a lot of my school friends and u have to find things to do, and go places
But I read all the time and learned way more than in school and never did drugs, so I feel its better and im gunna homeschool my kids some day

See for me its the other way around this is my first year in homeschool. So far its been good, and I love the way they utilize technology to make things a little bit more interactive. My teachers always have live sessions for lessons or just for general questions so that helps. And I mean i still have my friends from HS so I see them all the time after-school. But I do agree that there is a lot of freedom with it, and its easy to get sidetracked

The hardest part is trying to fit in with the other girls that are already in established cliques. They can be so mean

That's awesome! I'm currently being homeschooled and it's very recent, but so far I'm liking it. And I like that point that you brought about how you learned more in homeschooling than you did in a regular educational setting. One of my main reasons I wasn't found of regular schooling because I felt like I could always go at faster pace even though I still had honors classes. I didn't feel challenged enough I mostly just felt bombarded with work and I was completely uninterested. I like the fact that homeschooling allows an individual to learn at their own pace, and it's a little challenging because in some instances you have to self-teach.
