Funny you mentioned critical acclaim for both Taylor and Gaga Jake when I get the feeling that Gaga mimics and merely brings the spectacle in comparison to Taylor who doesn't try to be some great legend putting on a legendary show that represents the art of blah blah blah. As the article says, she is sincere and maintains a balance, something that Gaga could learn a thing or two from.

I agree. This part also reminded me of Gaga.
"Swift’s music is, for all intents and purposes, void of sociopolitical commentary. But she’s not writing for an audience with memories of the Vietnam War or one that really cares — on any meaningful level — about economic crises or presidential elections. If she attempted, at this stage of her career, to climb such lofty mountains, she would soapbox herself right into irrelevancy."
Nonetheless, I get the sense that Taylor and Gaga are the only two of their contemporaries who could've thrived in the rock-dominant industry of decades ago; Taylor as a folk rocker (Mitchell, Simon) and Gaga as an art rocker (Bowie).

Hello everyone! My history with Taylor: first heard Tim McGraw when it was released, thought it was cute and all, plus creative to have another artist's name as a title. But that was it. Then I heard Teardrops and I played it for days on end. Love Story sealed my fate and I was a fan ever since!
Picture to Burn is currently slaying me like it did those many moons ago.

Gaga's treatment of her music reminds me of like when there's a random toilet sitting there in a modern art gallary and you wonder why it's there. It's just a toilet like the one you **** on everyday, why would you pay $20,000 for it?
Then that artist gets all offended because it represents "the ****** habits of our society" and "how we're all born superstars, sitting on our pearly thrones everyday" and crap and calls you shallow for not understanding it and says it's too above you and radical for the gp to understand and anything can be art.
Like bitch, that's still a toilet, and I need to go to the bathroom.

I Almost Did (Make A Good Song) is too lyrically basic for Taylor's songwriting (It slays most of the other pop girls' discographies though) and her vocals are just too pitchy there. And Sad Beautiful Tragic is a well-written song imo that deserved better production (Yes, I know the instrumental slays, but the sad lyrics+the tempo+the vocals+the instrumental=mopey song. Nathan didn't have to make it sound so mopey cuz the lyrics are not mopey imo. They're just melancholic and melancholic=/=mopey). My 2 cents

I can't deal with this, Sad Beautiful Magic is a master piece that change lives, the magic of the lyrics, the music, the peace, the angst, so many feelings at the same time, I can't, I just can't.

I agree!
And speaking of Joni... She was pretty successful commercially and critically. Then by time, she turned out to be the hipster goddess that she is right now. I feel like Taylor will follow that same path. Adele will be poor man's Dusty Springfield. Gaga......... still Cyndi Lauper, if she continues this pattern.

It's funny you say this because Gaga she once posed with a toilet (or toilet seat?) that was on display in a museum.
