For battling, generation III, since it's nicely balanced (Gen IV and Gen V are way too fast paced, you kill everthing in one hit, whilst Gen II is kind of slow, and in Gen I it's all about critical hits, status and Hyper Beam).
In terms of memories, generation I. That's when it was really a phenomenon, almost everybody in my school played it, everybody would talk about Pokemon every day. It used to be on the news all the time, schools were banning Pokemon cards and all that sort of stuff, since they caused fights in the playground haha. And the anime was in TV in big slots. Now it seems like in real life not many people like it any more (and when people talk about it, it's usually to reminisce over the Gen I days). Also, I didn't have the Internet back then, so it was more fascinating to me. Now when I play computer games I just look at a walkthrough online, find cheats, etc.
