BTW was the most hyped up song in existence, Gaga was coming off her biggest era to date, Gaga announced it during her most iconic moment in front of millions at the VMAs, she announced the release dates on Twitter along with a pic of her ass on New Year's Day, she hyped it for months, the song had a massive radio deal the day it was released (Applause didn't have a significant radio deal, it just got rushed out, it certainly didn't have a ClearChannel deal because only like 5 stations played it on the hour), the endless Madonna comparisons got it even more exposure, Gaga performed the song at the Grammys, did interviews that whole release weekend etc.

Of course it was going to open with more than a song that was announced 3 weeks ago and rush released with barely any hype. It's holding up at 2 at the moment behind America's sweetheart who has promo EVERYWHERE (props to Katy's team), all Gaga has is an iTunes banner + her song isn't even being sent to radio officially until 8/20

"Applause" was always overestimated. I think people thought because she had a hugely successful tour she was guaranteed instant success with her first single. Those people forgot how badly "Marry The Night" bombed and that she hasn't been a hot commodity since "Born This Way" (single), which was released in early 2011. Times have changed. I always thought the 500k+ predictions were a bit much. The iTunes market is dominated by the general public, not one fanbase. You can still have a solid fanbase but do poorly or only decently on iTunes. Would anyone really doubt Beyonce's fanbase despite how her singles performed last era?
