It's a great balance of infectious vocals and crisp production. And it has a great simplicity about it. Dance songs that are a mish mosh of beats and vocals will never work....some will never learn.

I got the impression they meant it was the most single-worthy song on the album (or at least lead-worthy). That's fine with me, I hope the rest of the album is more out there.

Labels are usually rooting for the most chart-ready songs to be the lead singles. If Applause is indeed the best and most radio-friendly song she has on the album then...

Jimmy is dumb as hell with picking singles... Diplo basically flat out revealed in a recent interview that he was the reason Push and Shove wasn't No Doubt's lead single (or a single at all). The only song that could've really been a comeback for them, and Jimmy Iovine ****ing blew it

Applause wasn't even meant to be on the album said Lady #1Ga but when she played the songs for her friends / label, Jiimmy Ivine / Lovine (whatever her manager is called) thought it was the best one since she played it last or something like that. You can listen to the Ryan Seacrest interview
