Quite a few of my friends and cousins have transitioned out of relaxers gradually some have done weaves and braids and others would do things like roller sets/straw sets/braid outs/twist outs and I have another that just flat out shaved her head a la Solange and started from scratch. One day she had shoulder length relaxed hair and the next it was just gone -- brave ass bish. I could never!
I think it's easier for women that wear weaves/braids to transition without a drastic big chop 'cause they don't have really worry about blending the natural root texture with the relaxed ends. That's usually the most complicated part of transition. There are a lot of blogs/forums dedicated to natural hair care with transition guides tho.
