Arguably the most infectious summer song of the year is also the most played song on Atlanta radio: Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines."
The sexy, catchy tune with the Fat Albert-like "Hey hey hey!" interspersed throughout is that rare song that is on regular rotation on both R&B/hip hop stations and top 40 stations. Other times this has happened: Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" and Outkast's "Hey Ya!" For Star and Hot to be spinning the same song? That's broad appeal.
Seven Atlanta radio stations are spinning the song more than 400 times total in a week. (I can't remember the last time a station hit 400 stations.) Here's the tally for the past week:
Kiss: 17
Magic: 29
Hot: 45
Star: 44
V-103: 61
Power: 131
Q100: 79
B98.5 has held off but is set to add the song Monday, August 5, according to Program Director Chris Eagen.
Thicke, the son of actor Alan Thicke, has been a successful R&B artist for many years, the rare white singer better known to black audiences. This is his first true cross-over hit.
Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive," the previous No. 1 song, is more than 80 spins behind. And honestly, nothing will be coming close to overtaking "Blurred Lines" anytime soon.
The fastest rising songs: Luke Bryan's new "That's My Kind of Night," which debuts with 39 spins and Capital Cities' fast-rising "Safe and Sound," up 35 spins.
And talk show host Jimmy Fallon knows how to go viral - in a good way. Last year, he did a fun video with Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" using instruments found in an elementary school (15 million views). That was one of the biggest summer songs of 2012. Now he, Thicke and the Roots use kid instruments to play "Blurred Lines" here:
