Should Depression be expressed or repressed?
People in society are generally marked as attention *****s if they express their depression with things like cutting themselves, posting depressing Facebook statuses, self-diagnosing themselves with depression, crying often, etc.
Do you think they should express their depression or repress it? Or are people who express their depression really just attention seekers who are mildly depressed/sad?

Express
As someone who's suffered from depression, it's important to tell people, so you can get help. Otherwise it can get worse.
A woman I worked with had a baby and was acting really weird when she came back to work, I think someone said it was post-natal depression, something to do with having a baby and being depressed.
But then again, when she was pregnant, she found out her Father had cancer and started running around telling people that he was 'stealing her thunder'.
I think people write things like depression and mental illness of quickly without knowing the full. So it's not fair to go around calling people attention-seekers.

Repression isn't good for anything.
We should always be able to express ourselves.
Depression is a clinical condition and I think people should understand those people instead of making things worse for them. They need help that's all. People who cut themselves have reached a level where they cannot even think like normal people. There are people who do it for attention, but those who are really depressed do it because they think that death or self-harming is the only solution to cease their inner agony.
Being sad =/= being depressed. Depression is not sadness and people need to understand that before anything else because as long as they think that depression = sadness, they will think it's easy to just snap out of it. When someone is sad for some days, exercising, going out or meeting friends help. But when you are clinically depressed, a doctor is what you need.

I think the term "depressed" needs to belong to people who are CLINICALLY depressed first because like you said, there's a stigma around anyone expressing their depression.

Expressed but not on social media.
I think that it's okay for people to tell someone if they're feeling depressed or suffering from something that could be a mental illness or cutting, because they need help. Even if you're going around doing those things for attention, that within itself tells that something isn't right in that persons head.
I don't think anyone should self-diagnose and use the word "depression" so loosely though. However, sometimes you just know. Also, some people, like teens for example might not have the support of their family to get help, so they go above and beyond with things to make someone notice.
With that being said, I don't think people should take their problems to the internet,self-diagnose, or do/say crazy things for attention because it's not cute or fun to suffer from those disorders/problems. It should be expressed and spoken about but, not in an "attention *****-ish" way if you get what I mean.

Usually people suffering from depression will not talk about it constantly, especially online. They only confide in people they trust. I know because I have a friend who is genuinely depressed, it's not something they boast about, it's something they are ashamed of.

But surely some people who are depressed (self diagnosed or medically diagnosed) use social media to get sympathy and support from people they have otherwise not gotten?

Some people do, some don't. It feels good to know that someone cares or is concerned about what you're going through, so I understand that. I just mean the people who CONSTANTLY put it out there with the intention of getting attention. There's nothing wrong with a little sympathy.

Express.
And if you see it going on, just say you'll be there for that person. If depression becomes just a thing that happens(which it is), then there won't be people who only want attention saying they have it. Then you won't get people repressing it until they end up hurting themselves or others. They'll be more open about it because they won't be called attention *****s. And to say you don't want to see it is ********, because dealing with a depressed person is not about you, it's about that person.

I feel like that's what I've been doing. I don't know if I'm actually clinically depressed, but my life just feels like it's been dark for a few years now. It's not something I like to share, at least not in public. I just talk about it with a couple very close friends, knowing they would make me feel better.
I suppose people just have different ways of dealing with their problems, but repressing it just isn't healthy. It just builds up, and could lead to that person doing something quite drastic and could jeopardize not just their lives, but others as well.

ACTUAL depression should be expressed. Especially to people that can get you medical help.
The type of so-called depression that so many overreactive teenagers tend to have should be repressed.
