Smurfs 2 could have just been released internationally and not in the US and it would still be a huge success.
The US gross is just icing on the cake. Sony doesn't care about it's domestic performance, that's been clear. Another 150M+ pure profit movie.

Avril was seen as "talented" too, which makes her not having a Grammy really odd. I'm shocked they didn't give her at least 1 for her debut record. "Complicated" was nominated for ROTY and SOTY if I remember correctly.

Smurfs 2 was greenlighted because of how big the first one was globally...it's grosses outside of the US is what really matters and we won't know those for a few weeks because I don't think Sony is doing a global launch.
