The only reason the song works is because the instrumental sounds like an industrial car crash. It's a much more exciting song this way If it was a piano ballad it would be cheesy without the fun.

Most definitely, yes. It'd be fine if she manages to score legit dance uptempo hits, but she needs a global hit ballad in her discog. They usually stand the test of time, and can be great to boost catalog sales.
The impression Monsters got was that it would be a mermaid love story. Since the song is inherently cheesy 80s, the video could have been perfect and could have had longevity.
