Tegan and Sara graced New.Music.Live with their presence this afternoon, finally spilling some details about the new album as well as premiering their new video for 'Youth' live in the studio.
The audience was wild from the moment the host mentioned their names and introduced them, hungry to finally get a glimpse of the popular duo after their year long break. Loud applause and cheering roared through the room as the twins entered the studio, and while making their way through the audience they shook hands and handed out high fives to their dedicated fans. They briefly spoke to the host about the recent promo they have done in the UK so far and mentioned some of their upcoming projects, such as a performance on Conan on Friday and Tegan's ad campaign with Garnier, which will be unveiled at the end of the week as well.
The suspense was palpable, though, so they decided not to let the viewers wait any longer and the video for 'Youth' finally received its first broadcast. If you haven't seen it yet, read the description and check out the screenshot below.

The video features the twin sisters trekking through a polar landscape in the semi-dark with a tent and their belongings in tow, searching for a place to stay under the clear starry sky, clearly unhappy with their loneliness. So far so good, but here's where it turns interesting: On their way through the icy landscape, they encounter several wild animals and creatures (à la Where The Wild Things Are), trying to join them but getting rejected. In the end, they return to their initial starting point and settle down there, finally content with being on their own after realizing they don't fit in anywhere.
After the video was shown, the program returned with an amazed crowd who wouldn't stop cheering for what they had just seen. The host went to capture some opinions from the audience and here's what they had to comment.

That was such a beautiful video, I really loved the visuals. The CGI was done in a great way, it looked very professional and the concept was perfectly in sync with the song.

I liked how it was kinda dark but at the same time it wasn't, just like the song. And I think Tegan and Sara looked really pretty.

It was cute but not childish, a very relatable video I think, and it will put a smile on your face for sure.

Flattered by the positive reactions, Tegan and Sara seemed visibly relieved and excited about the reception and went on to explain the concept and meaning of it all.

“The song is based on the struggles young people go through when they grow up and try to fit in with their peers, without even knowing who they are as a person yet. There's so many different people trying to influence them and trying to tell them how to act, how to feel, that they can easily get caught up in trying to be like a certain group or clique they want to be a part of. We wanted to have that message in the video, but we didn't want to do it in a cliché way, so we decided to do something completely out of the box.
The dark visuals of the video in the wintery landscape represent the melancholy tone of the music and lyrics, and us wandering through the snow stands for the journey you go through when you're growing up. You encounter different people along your way, which is what the animals stand for, and we try to fit in with them just like a young person would try to assimilate with their peers. But like in the song, we realize it's not gonna work because we're different – in this case because we're humans and they're animals – so we move on, and after several of these experiences we stop seeing being different as a bad thing.
It can be a very desperate situation when you feel like an outsider, but once you stop stressing about it and focus on yourself instead of comparing yourself to others all the time, you can find to your true self and be happy with it. And I think that's an important message for young people, to rather think about their strengths and positive attributes instead of worrying about their alleged flaws and weaknesses all the time. The video portrays that in a way that is cute and light, but still serious and sincere so that people can learn something from it.”
Standing ovations resumed after this deep and intelligent explanations, and the crowd kept cheering as the duo revealed that their album name and release date would finally be announced the following week.
After the show was done, the two stuck around to spend some time with fans, a surprise meet and greet so to speak, which had not been planned but left everyone loving Tegan and Sara even more.
If you missed the premiere of 'Youth', you can catch the video on Youtube and Vevo, as well as teganandsara.com.
“Youth” is on iTunes now.
