They should not. Some schools offer free education to those who did amazing in high school, especially those in need who so did well.

People don't rebel because you're told to excel to get a scholarship or a free ride at your school from the beginning.

CA has something called the Board of Governor's waiver that gives in-state students $1 tuition at junior colleges if they meet the financial need. I did this for two years and got thousands of dollars in federal grants during it too which I saved up for university.

Despite that and working for a year and a half during college, I still ended up with $11,000 in debt after university .

But I agree with what someone said earlier, it's really hard to work out free higher education logistically in a country as big as America, especially when so many degree holders are having problems finding jobs that pay above poverty-level. There are definitely ways to make it cheaper though.

That's assuming that our current educational system is fair in terms of how intelligence is measured (hint: it's not). It's also extremely rare for anyone to get college paid for by academic achievement alone.

The top schools in the country do it. Anyway if they make it free then it would make going into college even harder than it is now. They would essentially make it more competitive, then that would not be fair because the people who can get in will have to have access to better education as a child and that comes with being in a wealthier household.

I don't think post-secondary should be free, but at least be affordable for everyone. Money is prime reason I haven't gone to post secondary, cause I was not paying $30,000 for a year at film school where they teach me things I can learn on my own. The only real thing I'd gain is connections into the actual film industry, and professional experience.

The spanish case: we've got public schools, private ones and then the semi-state-run; usually the private ones and the semi-state-run are religious schools, the last ones receiving an extra grant for being catholic ( that's illegal, but whatever...) , but since the Government is cutting all education's budgets the quality in PUBLIC schools is decreasing, oh and I forget to mention how collage ( we've got them private and public, not the middle term) is increasing its taxes and a lot of people are forced to quit while they're studying since they can't afford it

In Portugal we pay like 1000€ per year for public colleges and like 3000/4000/5000€ in private colleges

Public education is free in Australia. It's only if you want private that you have to pay.
