Adam Levine has criticised the media for blowing a flippant remark he made on The Voice out of proportion.
The Maroon 5 singer, who serves as a coach on the NBC show, caused controversy earlier this year after quipping "I hate this country" in response to the voting results.
"If your intentions are good, if someone misunderstands you, regardless of what the scenario is, I think people can see through stupid media hype - no offence," Levine said at a Television Critics Association panel.
"As long as you allow yourself to be who you are, you can't really defend every single thing you say."
On The Voice's failure to produce a breakout star, he added: "There's been a lot of success depending on how you define the term success. If you're not in the negative in this business, you're succeeding.
"The immediacy of winning and becoming a huge star is a fairy tale that I'd love to see take place, but it's still a fairy tale."
Levine previously insisted that he "obviously" loves America, explaining that his comment was "lighthearted".
