Yes, Motorola tried and failed at making that work well + it looks exactly like the same (ugly) ones that used to come on some older laptops. Fingerprint scanners have been around on consumer devices for forever now. It's also on the back of the phone and messes with the design.

As far as truly unique hardware goes, the fingerprint scanner seems fairly novel -- but in practice it's a little frustrating. It does work as advertised, but being told to re-swipe your finger if it doesn't take when you're trying to get into the phone quickly can be a little bothersome. Unless you really need the high security, a standard passcode will suffice for most people.

Sometimes it takes two or three tries to scan properly. If you’ve ever tried a computer with a biometric fingerprint scanner, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

If this is actually implemented well into the home button without being slower than normal then it'll be an accomplishment since fingerprint scanners in consumer devices usually for the most part, suck.
