Hey, sometimes it's effective. The child sometimes remembers that he doesn't want to be physically hurt and that doing very bad things will cause such punishment. Taking away things of theirs knowing that after a few days or so they'll get it back can only go so far... Shouting will probably promote shouting back or even worse, the temper tantrum where there is little the parent will have much control of their child and themselves. Truly, whooping a child shouldn't be the first response, but it shouldn't be dismissed as an ineffective or inexcusable punishment. I understand where you're coming from, it's bad to hit a child and you never know if the response you'll get from the child will be wholly negative, so you're not wrong in your beliefs, but maybe a bit over-exaggerated...
