Discussion: What made the Trayvon Martin case so big?

I mean so big to the fact that Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Madonna are supporting foundations helping the Martin family with their loss?

Was it just because of the verdict? I mean there are murders 24/7 in life, yet none of them are as big as this case

Because an innocent teenager was shot to death and his killer went free. All ya'll can stop bringing up if he was white; he would not have been killed if he was white. His killer was racist and he was unarmed. And the defense of the case tried to make Trayvon look like a thug which is extremely racist, and Zimmerman got to go free. Trayvon didn't. So that's why it's so big. Get a clue.

Maybe it doesn't seem like "a big deal" to you because you can't relate to it.

and do you know how many other innocent teenagers that are raped, murdered, or just killed because they were gay?

I mean the two lesbians teenagers who were shot yet it didn't have as much media coverage as Trayvon Martin? They were unarmed too

Okay? This thread isn't about being gay. That is very sad. Do you want me to point out innocent civilians being killed overseas in war? No. You only care about those deaths because you can relate to them. I 100% agree that the two lesbian teenagers who got killed should get justice, because Trayvon didn't.

Actually the only thing I see on news lately is another celebrity lost sleep because of Trayvon Martin or the Royal Baby was born. Literally nobody cares about anything else.

And I think the reason why so many people are caring is because it's injustice across a lot of fields. There's the fact that Trayvon was so young. There's also the fact that he was African American. And there's also the fact that Zimmerman got away with murder. Also, on a smaller scale, this could even be an issue in gun restriction debates. It seems pretty much impossible to have an opinion about anything that isn't tied in with this case.

Due to the fact that it took 45 days just to arrest Zimmerman. The only reason the case came to light is because black people had made so much effort with their public protests. And please @ people saying propaganda, the only thing that is being promoted is racial equality. But at the end of the day this case only stayed in the spotlight for so long only to serve as a distraction, and to divide people. Americans are so foolish and brainwashed that they falling for it everytime. Racial equality is a huge issue but it definitely isn't the biggest issue in the US; the most evil corrupt nation. Neither is gay rights. When your government is hunting down a man for exposing their own crimes, you know you have bigger issues.

What made the Trayvon Martin case a nationwide event was that it was able to capitalize on racial tensions in America. That tension grew with every new piece to the puzzle. I hate to phrase it this way, but it was like a "great" story. You had an "interesting" conflict, which happened to be the murder of a young black male in the South, where the turmoil laid within justice vs. injustice. Basically, "would minorities win or lose?" There are other stories out there, but they just don't appeal to the masses because they probably aren't "interesting."

From a journalistic perspective, it does not get better much better than the Trayvon Martin incident. <- Again, I hate to phrase it that way.

I'm never quite sure what people mean when they say this. Are you trying to say that the conviction of murder/manslaughter in his case does not concern the possibility of him being racist, or are you trying to say that race didn't play a major factor in the incident? You'd be quite naive to believe the latter
