Tegan and Sara on Radio 1 and new single premieres
As announced earlier this day, Tegan and Sara's new single 'Youth' exclusively premiered on BBC Radio 1's Evening Show with Zane Lowe tonight. To surprise listeners, the Canadian twins were live in the studio to chat about the song and some other little things, revealing some information that every fan and follower of them will love! Here's how it all went down.
Zane Lowe: So, ladies and gentlemen, you've been waiting for it, and now it's happening.. I've got the new Tegan and Sara record for you here, ready to be played and let out into the world! And if that wasn't enough, I've actually got the ladies right here with me in the studio.. they'll be here right after the song plays to give us some more info on it and have a little chat! But first let me play their song, it's called 'Youth' and personally, I freaking love it.. it's like old and new Tegan and Sara all in one, if you know what I mean! So you better turn your radio up right now, and give this your full attention, it's Zane Lowe's hottest record in the world right now.. Tegan and Sara with the amazing 'Youth'!
~ song plays ~
~ song fades to the background about 20 seconds before the end ~
Zane Lowe: Now tell me, did I lie when I said this song was amazing??
~ song comes back in and finishes ~
Zane Lowe: Woo!! Fantastic!!!
Tegan: I can't believe you just played it, ha!
Sara: It's so strange, like, we've been hearing it in the studio for so long and it feels like we just finished it, but now it's on the radio already! And people get to hear it!
Zane Lowe: It must be a good feeling, eh? Or does it still make you nervous when you don't know how people are gonna react to it?
Sara: Well, a little. I mean, when you've worked on something for so long and got to the point where you thought it's done, and ready to be heard by the public, then your confidence is already on a certain level that the reception's gonna be okay. But of course you're aiming for something more than that, you don't just want the fans to like it, you want everyone else to like it, too, and maybe even people who haven't heard of the band before, so of course there's always those little doubts about what if it doesn't appeal to a broader audience.
Tegan: Yeah. With our last album [Heartthrob], we already branched out a bit and reached people who weren't interested in us before, but I still wouldn't see us as a straight out mainstream act. There's just more things in the mix now, from our initial style to something more accessible, and you never know if you've balanced those elements well until you get a reaction from listeners.
Zane Lowe: I just realized we started this interview without a proper introduction (chuckles).
Sara: Did we? Oh wow. I guess it's because I just started talking after the song was done because I was so excited. (laughs)
Zane Lowe: I get that, I totally do (smiles). But do you still want me to introduce you to our listeners, in case they tuned in later? Which would be a shame, because that means they would've missed your new song..
Tegan: Yes! Introduce us. Give us some decent promo. (laughs)
Zane Lowe: (laughs) Alright then. (pauses) So, everyone who's listening right now (chuckles) We have two very- Man, I don't know but this is weird. I'm just gonna mess it up. How about you introduce yourselves, ladies?
Tegan: Ooh yes, sure! Well.. (pauses) I'm Tegan..
Sara: ..and I'm Sara..
Tegan and Sara (together): ..and we're Tegan and Sara!
Zane Lowe: (laughs) That was perfect! How long did you practice to get that right? Or does it work automatically because you've got that twin vibe going on?
Sara: Both, probably. We've been doing that since we were kids, talking simultaneously to annoy people sometimes. And when we formed the band, it became our thing whenever we had to introduce ourselves, it's somewhat cheesy but it just stuck.
Tegan: We're used to it now so we don't even have to think about it. It's pretty awesome.
Zane Lowe: Is that how you work together, too? I know you don't usually write songs together, but in the studio for example? Do you just click?
Tegan: Overall, yeah. We're both pretty similar in our work ethic and the way we like to go about certain things, so we understand each other and give each other enough room to work on our own ideas. Like, we're both perfectionists so I get when Sara isn't happy with a particular melody or lyric yet even though it seems fine to everyone else.
Sara: It makes it easier to work together for us, but I think on the other hand it can be tough for the people around us. Because we'll just be spaced out in our own little world working like maniacs, and our producer or band will be looking at us like, okay, we'll just let them be and come back later (laughs).
Zane Lowe: Is that what happened when you recorded 'Youth' as well? 'Cause I could definitely see that kind of story behind the song. It sounds like put a lot of work into the details because I feel like every time I listen to it, I discover something new about it.
Sara: That's nice that you say that, because we love when a song is like that. 'Youth' does have a lot of layers to it, I don't think it was a conscious decision, it just happened when we were recording it because it all started with the demo Tegan brought in and it was just her and the guitar. We were almost tempted to keep it stripped down like that, only bring in the band a bit, but then we messed around with the synths and Greg - our producer - came up with a few ideas and we built off of that and kept adding more and more layers. And in the end it had this depth not only lyrically, but also sonically, and without being heavy or dragged down.
Tegan: I didn't really know what to do with it after I had finished the demo, because I could imagine it both with a more toned down instrumental as well as a full-on production. But once we started working on it, Sara and I kept bouncing ideas off of each other, it was almost like we were trying to surpass each other with our instruments and it was a great dynamic that I think translated really well into the song.
Zane Lowe: It does have a great dynamic, I think it's very smart how it builds up throughout the verses towards the chorus because it really draws you in, and then when the synths kick in it's an unexpected twist that grasps you even more.
Tegan: That's one of the reasons we chose this as the lead single, because we thought- we hoped that something like people would notice and react to it and get intrigued as to what the rest of the album has to offer. (pauses) Oops, did I just say album...
Zane Lowe: Haha, you did! And people all over the world heard it! There's no going back, you heard it here, Tegan and Sara are coming out with a new album!!
Sara: I might as well confirm it now, yes, the album's ready. We finished pre-production about two weeks ago and we're slowly getting back to promoting now. We're actually gonna be in the UK for a little bit, we thought this time we're gonna try something new and start it all here.
Zane Lowe: And you're not gonna regret it, I promise! We love you here, and it's been a pleasure having you on my show, ladies. You're gonna have all our support for sure.
Tegan: Thank you, it really means a lot to us! The reception here in the UK has always been amazing, people are always here for us when we come over and being on your show is such a huge honor. We couldn't have asked for a better start for this new era.
Zane Lowe: You heard it, guys, Tegan and Sara LOVE our country so let's give back some of that love! In a couple of minutes, 'Youth' is gonna go up on iTunes and if you haven't guessed, I strongly recommend you buy it! And in the unlikely case that you still have doubts about it, don't worry, I'm gonna play it again before the end of the show, so stay tuned!
Sara: It's being released worldwide, so wherever you're listening to this show now, it'd be great if you could buy the song! A lyric video is also gonna go up on Youtube soon so that people can just listen to it. We've got the whole package ready.
Zane Lowe: So there's also gonna be a music video? You know the fans want one!
Tegan: Oh absolutely. I can't say too much about it yet, but there will be a video and we're working on putting it out as soon as possible. And the album too, it's all coming! We're gonna do some press the next few days so there's constantly gonna be updates from now on. We're officially back.
Zane Lowe: That's amazing, and I'm sure everyone will agree that it's great to have you back! Now just to wrap this up real quick, there's one thing I wanted to talk about - in the statement you released earlier today about your single, you said that it was inspired by your fans and their struggles growing up. It surprised me a bit because we're used to your songs being stories about your personal experiences and relationships. So how did you decide to write about something you hadn't actually been through yourself?
Tegan: It's definitely a change from our usual songwriting, and it wasn't that easy because I second-guessed myself a lot and whether I should really write about something I haven't really experienced. But over all the years we've interacted with our fans and grown together with them, we've heard so many of those stories where they told us about their problems and when I was writing for this album, I kept thinking back to it and what a universal thing it seems to be. I knew that a lot of people would be able to relate to it, but I also wanted to make people think about what young adults go through these days, so I think that's what eventually drove me to write this song. And it was a great challenge, I mean I've actually written from different perspectives other than my own before but this one was different because it's such a meaningful, important topic, and I wanted to approach it in an authentic, heartfelt way, not preachy or condescending, so that was really a challenge to channel that vibe when I was basically an outsider to the theme of the song.
Zane Lowe: Let me tell you, I'm just in awe right now because that was so thoughtful and beautifully said. I think it's the perfect way to end this, even though I would have loved to chat with you some more! But on the plus side, that gives me the chance to play your new single again!
Sara: That's at least something. (laughs) Thanks again for having us, Zane. We had a blast here on Radio 1!
Zane Lowe: Anytime, ladies. I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in the UK, and you should definitely stop by again the next time you're here, maybe with a tour and the new album hopefully?
Tegan: I could definitely see that in the future. You'll be the first to hear about it.
Zane Lowe: Awesome! So, that were Tegan and Sara right here in the studio with me talking about their new single, 'Youth', which is my hottest record in the world this week! I'm gonna play it again right now, and maybe again at the end of the show, depending on the feedback I get from you guys. So head on over to Twitter or the BBC Radio 1 website and let us know what you think! This is Tegan and Sara with their new single 'Youth', available worldwide on iTunes right now! Thanks again, ladies!
Tegan and Sara: Bye!
~ song plays again ~
~ #youth becomes a trending topic ~
~ Twitter crashes ~
