You brought this up, so I have a few stats for you. For example lets compare the Grammy AOTY winners and nominees with Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. You are talking a lot about the 60s, so lets start with them.
Rolling Stones list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time includes
126 albums from the 60s from all genres.
For Album of The Year Grammy Award was nominated
52 albums with
10 winners.
How many of those 10 winners of AOTY made the Rolling Stone list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time?
The answer is
2:
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
How many of those 52 AOTY nominees is among those 126 albums from the 60s that made the Rolling Stone list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time?
The answer is only
4 (plus the 2 winners):
Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends
Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music
The Beatles - Help
The Beatles - Revolver
The results arent much better with other decades.
Im not saying that those AOTY Grammy winners and nominees are bad albums. Im just saying that both, Grammys and RS were trying to honor the best, most exceptional albums of the time and you would expect more similarities. Rolling Stone just had the advance of time when they made their list.
