I already have a laptop, but it's old and on the heavier side so I don't want to lug it around everywhere I go. If I pick the tablet, I'll probably get one of those case-keyboards. Keeping that in mind, which one is the better choice? Feel free to post examples!

You'll be writing tons and tons of papers. I would recommend a laptop 100%. Some of them are really light now.

Definitely Laptop. Tablets really aren't practical if you're wanting to be doing lots of research and writing papers which you'll be doing lots of during your college years.

A tablet is good because it's light and easy to carry everywhere. But taking notes on it is a HASSLE if you don't have a keyboard. Sometimes I like to have a tape recorder next to my professor just in case I miss something but even then I don't like tablets much, it just didn't help me as much as a laptop

You will be writing a lot (or typing in this case) so I would say a laptop because it's much easier to write a 10 page paper on a laptop then it is on a small tablet . Also laptops have better memory, is more versatile, and comes in a variety of sizes. Not all laptops have to be huge and heavy to take around. Actually out of the 5 days I went to school, I only carried laptops on 2 days because the other days I had labs/math class

I'm in my third year of a college and I highly recommend a laptop. You'll be writing a lot, taking notes, and doing a lot of research. You can do all those things on a tablet but it's a lot easier and more convenient to do it on a laptop.

Get a small laptop. Don't nobody wanna deal with all that touchscreen **** all the time, lol. You'll need a keyboard.

I had both in college. I had a laptop and iPad.

For typing papers, and other heavy things use a laptop, for an tablet use it to take notes in class and to carry your textbooks. If you have the money to afford both do that. if you don't just get a laptop.

Laptop by miles. I have and love my tablet but Lord is a mess to try to write essays and stuff like that.

Would most of y'all still recommend a laptop if you have a desktop at home?

I'm looking into buying a tablet or a laptop soon as well but I do have my desktop at home for writing papers and stuff. I'd been thinking that a tablet with a keyboard hookup would be fine for taking notes.

But with regard to the OP, if we're talking about your only computer I'd definitely say laptop. Much more capable and versatile.

I guess if you have a desktop at home I'd recommend the tablet instead. You can do all the laptop things on the desktop and still could take good notes on the tablet (if it has a keyboard)

tablet is for the occasional ebook/movie aka recreation. Not going to be writing many award winning papers on them.

Laptop all the way. A tablet does NOT have all of the necessary components needed to ensure your success in a class.

Definitely a laptop; but for what you're interested in, you should save up and get an iPad further down the road. Incredibly convenient to have both tbh.
