It's because most of these people probably live with their parents so they don't have to pay for their housing, food, bills, etc. If you live off your own income and have $20 in your account then there's no shame in that (unless you're needlessly overspending) but try to save up because you should always have some back up money.

Stealth PayPal accounts are the way to go though. Only person who can touch your money is PayPal and that's only if you mess up.
