Katy Perry thinks Smurfette really "comes into her own" in The Smurfs 2.
Katy Perry says The Smurfs sequel is "heartfelt".
The singer voices Smurfette in the animated children's franchise.
This time around her character has complex layers, with Smurfette being kidnapped by the evil Gargamel as she holds the key to a spell.
"The storyline is really heartfelt," she explained to ET Online.
"Smurfette is super vulnerable this time. She's kind of like super emotional, more than just cute. She's complex, she's coming into her own with her set of growing pains. There's a lot more depth to her character, so you need a lot more depth in the voicing."
Katy joins stars such as Hank Azaria and Neil Patrick Harris for the film.
The 28-year-old believes it's the very real human characteristics that draw people into The Smurfs.
"It's like everybody goes through these, kind of, coming-of-age growing pains, questioning existence," she smiled.
"In some ways, [Smurfette's] almost, like, turning into a teenager. She's like, 'Why am I here? What am I doing?' I think people can relate with that."
Neil plays Patrick in the movie and actually appears as himself among the blue cartoon characters.
The How I Met Your Mother star thinks children and parents alike will be interested in what The Smurfs get up to.
"We're always playing with another level of the movie that you can watch and appreciate as an adult, which I think is a smart call, because hopefully children will be wanting to watch The Smurfs sequel multiple times at home," he chuckled.
"It's nice for the adults to have something to latch on to and I think father-son bonding is always an interesting issue, and I think it's played really well in this movie."

A sequel that changes scarcely a drop of Smurf-essence in its winning formula. – Variety

Hybrid specialist Raja Gosnell returns as director and ably delivers slapstick comedy for the kids and nicely shot views of Paris landmarks for the adults. – Screen International

The Smurfs 2 will keep a child reasonably entertained for 105 minutes--but so will a large, empty cardboard box. The box is more likely to stimulate a child's imagination and less likely to contain jokes about testicles. – The Wrap

Beyond a few chuckle-worthy one-liners and some amusing visual comedy, there's not much to engage adults, although the wee ones should be distracted enough. – Hollywood Reporter

The name is seen as enough to fill the multiplexes, and there's something deeply cynical about that. You feel the Smurfs themselves would not approve. – Digital Spy

Raja Gosnell's particular zeal to modernize the Smurfs only develops this would-be family comedy into a shamelessly manipulative smurftastrophe. – Slant Magazine

It will do what it sets out to do -- to entertain younger kids without driving their parents nuts -- but the bar isn't set very high here. – Times-Picayune
