Apparently you've never heard of Vitamin D deficiency or rickets?
And I doubt the shorter life expectancy of humans in the past was due to sun exposure or vasts amount people getting skin cancer. You should also consider that people with darker skin and more melanin have been around for a very long time. I sure getting too much exposure and hiding from the sun was the least of their concerns.
It's called moderation. No one ever said the sun isn't potentially dangerous if you spend unnecessarily long periods of time in the sun.. And for "beauty" reasons no less. It's not like people are out hunting or foraging and doing activities humans have been doing for thousands of years that require them to be in the sun
