Talking about branding.
Do you know The Truth About Love and branding?
P!nk – the musical artist known for her acrobatic performances ,tough attitude, and tell it like it is song lyrics – is a rockstar example of the truth about love and branding.
So what do love and branding have in common, you ask?
A lot. Who Knew?
13+ years ago, a woman named Alecia Beth Moore from outside of Philadelphia, PA was Mizunderstood. She was trying her hardest to Do What U Do to make a name for herself in the music industry. Living your dream is no easy task! Alecia, a.k.a P!nk, was determined to succeed, and Try and stay true to herself in the process. She’s tough and rough – in a good way.
On a radio interview with Elvis Duran and The Morning Show, she once said she would sooner flip burgers at Wendy’s than ever see a media coach to soften her style. Over the last decade and a half she hasn’t changed – and she’s successfully built a brand around her own persona – plus a few hundred shades of the color pink.
So What you ask? Well her brand has evolved so eloquently that a marketer can’t help be just a fan of her music – but also of the lessons she teaches on how to create a popular and sustainable brand.
Just Give Me a Reason why P!nk’s brand isn’t one to marvel at?
Sure – she could probably arm wrestle your dad (and win) – but name one other female rockstar that is known by one word, one word that refers to not only a style of music, but a persona, an attitude, a mantra…a belief.
You see, that’s the truth about love and branding. The most popular brands are ones you love because they love themselves. They possess an attitude and a belief that is genuine, one you can relate to…and can bond with.
Try and think of the top 3 brands or musicians you love. What do they have in common? Why do you love them so much? I bet it at least has to do somewhat with the fact that you can relate to them or their music – basically to their brand.
So how can you create a brand, like P!nk, for your business?
Get the party started - in order to create a rockstar brand, you need to know what you represent. What you stand for…what you believe in. P!nk stands for the under dogs. The ones who choose to be different, unique. And isn’t afraid to express it, either. So figure out what you represent and what you stand for…and tie that into your strategy, your brand, and your products and services.
Raise your glass - now you know what you represent, how are you going to express it? Ok, so you don’t write music. And probably can’t sing. Well, like P!nk, of course. But you do have a voice. You have plenty of digital tools in which to express what you represent. Express that voice.
Are We All We Are - now that you’ve expressed your voice, understand where your brand is today, where you want it to go, and pay attention to how it could evolve. Because…
Run - is a song P!nk wrote for her daughter, the catalyst who revolutionized the next phase in her career and the P!nk brand. She has the same representation, the same belief, the same mantra – but by being a mom, she saw the need for change. She’s still the same Alecia and the brand is still the same P!nk, just evolved as the environment changed. Your brand needs to take the same journey. Know when to adapt, when to flex, and when to change. You don’t want to be saying to your customers (or fans) Please Don’t Leave Me – if excitement and engagement about your brand begins to fade– it’s time for a change – and that’s perfectly ok. Be prepared to modify your brand – like P!nk, you can do so and still retain the components people get excited about and relate to…
So whether your brand is more like Throwing Glitter in the Air or a rendition of U and Ur Hand - one brand, one belief, one mantra, one person, you can learn from is P!nk. The rockstar, the visionary, the punk, the mom, and the one who will drive a motorcycle through your front door, arm wrestle your mom, and shave your dog.
Because if you love P!nk’s brand – you know you can express anything you want and still be yourself. And that’s why people love brands. Because they express something you can relate to, believe in, and get excited about.
