Minority groups have history of persecution so it's no foreign concept for these groups to turn the slurs around and use them casually in conversation (as dysfunctional and odd as it seems). If a gay refers to a fellow gay as ph@git, it isn't offensive and seen more as a joke/light-hearted kind of thing. However, if a straight says it is offensive. Same with the n word and the b word with women.
