The co-writer and guest vocalist of Rihanna's 3x platinum critically acclaimed smash worldwide hit "Stay" has revealed the song has a second interpretation Many alledge it's about God.
"I don’t claim to be an amazing writer but I think the idea for me is to always introduce more than one idea or more than one perspective into a song" the alternative interpretation of the lyrics of Stay appears to be between the singer and a Christian God, which is not shocking since Ekko is the son of a Protestant preacher and grew up singing in church. The song begins with lyrics about being a "hot headed believer" and how she "threw my hands in the air" as if pleading with God.Ekko stated that "In many ways, growing up in church taught me how reverent music can be. When you grow up around anything, it can be difficult to process it all until you are able to broaden your perspective. I feel like I’ve only just begun to revisit those memories and I’m learning to weave experiences into my music in my own way." Other clear Christian values are expressed in the lyrics when grace is alluded to in the line "It's not just something you take, it's given" and the irony of being made whole by one who is crucified in the line "Funny you're the broken one but I'm the only one who needed saving".
Do you agree about this song have religious inspiration.
I think the song has different meanings to different people. Like it could be about God, A lover, A relative/friend, someone who has passed away. Just depends on who the listener thinks it's about, who Rihanna thinks it's about & who the writer wrote it about.
That could have been the original intention but as soon as Rihanna laid her vocals for the track, the meaning changed to something that suited her. Rihanna and her power of emotive interpretation.
"I don’t claim to be an amazing writer but I think the idea for me is to always introduce more than one idea or more than one perspective into a song
It's not JUST about God for those that'll come in picking it apart. It's kind of like Mumford and Sons "I will wait" that song had strong biblical references in it.
This isn't the first time a song about simple, romantic love (and its trials) have been equated with religious devotion and the search for divine love.
