The first time I heard the word twerk was 10 years ago in Chingy's song Right Thurr. That was my jam back when I was 9. I used to copy the dance and everything

"I like the way you do that right thurr. right thurr. Walk with a switch, pull it over, make it twerk. make it twerk."

It started in the south. They have a dance called New Orleans bounce which is basically where twerking and booty poppin derived from.

and yes it's a African-American thing..but Ion know who made it popular. I guess white people are just now catching on(?)

Because of the twerk team releasing vidz in 2010 and 2011, despite the fact that twerking has BEEN around for years. Then white people got hip to it and the popularity of the dance got taken to new heights, hence why you see some claim Gaga or even Miley popularized it (even though they can't even twerk themselves)

Like I said, it originated many, many years ago in New Orleans, and none of your buttless pop stars popularized it as you can see it in many popular videos BEFORE they jumped on the bandwagon.
