Beyonce's VMA performance made several headlines right after the 2012 VMA,s not to mention the fact that it broke twitter records etc. It's iconic, Even if it wasn't. Beyonce performing skills as a whole are iconic. She's gonna go down as one of the greatest female performers of all time. What is Rihanna going to go down for?

I agree with this (to some extent). The most memorable part is the pregnancy. And that's the only reason why it made headlines. Undoubtedly. That being said, it's still a part of the performance even if the iconic part wasn't her performing. Like all iconic performances, there is an element that without it, it would lose the iconic touch. Without the kiss, the Britney-Madonna-Xtina thing would probably be a forgotten one.
