It REALLY annoys me when cynical people complain about how 'everything is terrible nowadays', and 'everything was better back then', when actually, if they went back in time they would probably realise they couldn't live in any other era.
We only see a glamorised version of the past, anyone who thinks that things were much easier in the past is naive to say the least.
If you went back hundreds of years, I'm sure you'd find just as many people complaining about how 'the world is not what it was', and the typical 'kids nowadays' comment.
I think the retro/throwback trend in music is okay right now but as it suggests, it's just another trend, like dancepop was from 2010-2012. Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake & Daft Punk are the main figureheads of the trend ATM, with their images & songs like Treasure, Suit & Tie & Get Lucky especially. People were complaining during the dancepop era that we needed to get "quality music like the old days" & contrary to what people might think, labels listened to this criticism & this the throwback trend is their response. The music has been good so I'm not complaining at all.
However, people can definitely be too clingy to the past. I appreciate when artists can combine past, present & future like JT/Timbo did on 20/20 Experience. But there will be a time when artists really start looking for new sounds to explore. Yeezus is a great example of a forward thinking futuristic record.
lol. Someone is having a melt-down about Blurred Lines getting to #1 I see.
But seriously, as long as the music is good, I don't mind.
And I don't know why people are bringing up Lady Gaga. Her songs sound like Ace of Base, ABBA, Depeche Mode, etc. There's nothing futuristic about her, that stuff all started in the 80's in Europe.
