People are going to buy the Xbox One regardless, it's not DOA. We need to slow down this circlejerk a little.
The DRM rules are a pain in the ass but Steam has been doing this for a long time already, and it's thriving. You've never been able to install full games onto the cloud before - this can pose huge problems for copyright issues. Going to your friend's house, signing in and playing your exact game is highly appealing.
If you buy your games... this kind of thing slowly but surely won't bug you. Up to 10 people are allowed to use your copy in your household and you can give it to one person (one time only). That's really not
so unreasonable.
Yes, the 24-hour rule is a huge pain in the ass, but it's for the DRM. People are just going to have to learn how to hotspot their phone (not difficult) and get the Xbox to ping that way if their internet is down for more than 24-hours. This doesn't really consume much data. I don't know anyone who has their internet down that frequently that it would be a problem. Or if they take the box to their grandparents house or something, better hope you have mobile connection or they have dialup. Otherwise, SOL... maybe they'll be sympathetic and let you take prolonged "passes" out when you know you're going to be travelling for a bit, haha /dreaming.
Like if you're complaining that you can't use the XboxOne because you don't have a steady internet connection... I have to agree with them, why are you complaining? Why must they cater to you? That's like being angry at Microsoft for not providing a solar paneled Xbox for those who don't have electricity while camping... or being pissed that new movie releases aren't released on VHS. As long as you have a telephone line, you can pay pennies per month and ping it through dial-up if you're that desperate. If you can't afford dialup, then you have way bigger problems than whether or not you should buy a $500+tax + games piece of technology.
These DRM rules will be the future. Yes - it sucks. Trust me when I say no one pines from this kind of crap more than me. But the developers love it. I want to see how they handle downloaded movies via USB. I hear the Xbox 360 plays them without issue and the PS3 Cinavia blocks many digital copies. People don't complain about that DRM though? Go figure.
PS4 can **** you through the DRM, we just don't know how they're doing it yet since it's
up to the developers. We're acting like PS is completely innocent of this kind of stuff, whose to say they won't block you ala Xbox if given the opportunity? Xbox One just has a stricter, more upfront policy. PS4 doesn't, it's the publisher's choice. You don't know how that'll play out just yet.
"As clarified in a statement today, third-party publishers like EA, Ubisoft, Activision et al
are free to add DRM to their PS4 games if they wish, and may require the user to pay some sort of “activation fee” (and connect their console to the Internet in order to verify that this fee has been paid) in order to access a used title’s online features."
I think I'm staying with the 360 and buying a PS4 though. We'll see what games are available and how willing I am to cough up the cash, but PS4 wins for now.
