He wasn't popular before Pour It Up though. He had one song that peaked higher than PIU before PIU was released, and it was released nearly a year before PIU. No one bothered to go to him, specifically a mainstream female artist, until Rihanna did.

Lil Wayne's Love Me came out after Pour It Up. And Mercy isn't nearly as memorable or known as Pour It Up.
