News: Pope says atheists are redeemed

And in this era of religious controversies, it's a timely reminder that God cannot be confined to our narrow categories."
Of course, not all Christians believe that those who don't believe will be redeemed, and the Pope's words may spark memories of the deep divisions from the Protestant reformation over the belief in redemption through grace versus redemption through works.

Francis's reaching out to atheists and people who belong to no religion is a marked contrast to the attitude of former Pope Benedict, who sometimes left non-Catholics feeling that he saw them as second-class believers.

He's right.
To me, God's love is univervsal and a good atheist deserves to go to heaven and a bad christian deserves hell. Simple as that.
Actually, the Bible says something about that:

They basically say, that if you are hot (a good, practicing christian) or cold (a complete atheist/agnostic), Jesus will accept you, but if you are a self-righteous hypocrite that uses religion to hate, he will spit you,

That's a huge shift. I really like Pope Francis.

And atheists: it may not mean a lot to you, but it means a lot to those of us that are religious and have atheist friends and family that we lovely dearly.

There is difference between being redeemed and saved. Jesus redeemed us all regardless of our faith by His passion and death on the cross. However, it is still up to the individual to accept that redemption via conversion and the keeping of Christ's commands. All of mankind is redeemed, but only those who accept the terms of that redemtion are saved.

I'm atheist but even I can recognize a nice gesture by a man trying to make a closed-minded institution seem a little more accepting. He has good intentions, even though it doesn't *actually* matter in a religious sense.

It doesn't matter but when the Catholic Church says **** about Atheist it matters. He's trying to break the wall between Catholics and Atheists. Some people are so up their asses.

Why do Atheists always come across as so bitter towards the Church? I'm pretty sure it's the 21st Century and you have every right to choose which beliefs you please. All this suppressed anger tells me Atheists are more mad about their parents inducting them against their will than the actual values of said religion.
