It's clear you haven't read or even watched LOTR. It's more than just walking around then at the end throw the ring in the fire. There's a reason why LOTR quotes are used by preachers and other respected personalities why HP quotes are used in Tumblr.

LOTR is the ultimate amazing novel with amazing films. HP films (except PoA)

But both series are fantastic and inspired generations of readers and will continue to do so for many years. Personally, HP is the series that got me reading as a child.

LOTR books are vastly overrated and usually win in polls because "how could HP be a classic it won't stand the test of time wah wah wah" from snobby book fans (I mean on book forums, not on ATRL).

Although the actors in the HP movies are mostly fantastic, the movies themselves were all over the place. The 5th and 6th movies were especially atrocious, though both parts of Deathly Hallows made up for that. Overall I'll give it to HP as I'm a huge fan (I reread the entire series every summer )

Lmfao HP is better and people saying otherwise won't choose Harry Potter becauses its too "mainstream". I tried reading LOTR and it wasnt very good at all. Anyways Harry Potter is read by all ages while LOTR is not. LOTR movies are better probably but the books is what truly matters

I can't at people saying LOTR isn't good or HP is basic... they're both Iconic ... IF HP ended so many years ago It woud've been considered as Iconic as LOTR it's just that It ended 1-2 years ago and people can't appreciate Its Iconicness yet :X and LOTR is one of the best movies ever.. Its fantasy and at the same time the most meaningful movie

UGH. The Harry Potter book series is literally flawless. The movies are such a let down.

On the other hand JRR Tolkien created a very elaborate & extremely detailed UNIVERSE, with at least 3 different made up languages and a complete history spanning of millenniums (eons?) with his middle earth books. But if we're only considering the LOTR part of his extensive catalog, then...

movies:
LOTR > HP

books:
HP > LOTR

LOTR books aren't "boring" they're just older/written during a different time era so it's a bit harder to read especially for those with a limited vocabulary.

I started with "The Silmarillion" by Tolkien, which is basically a bunch of short stories that all, very faintly, tie together and lead up to the time period that we see in the LOTR movies.

"The Hobbit" is a much better, and easier, read than the LOTR series as well.

My response to this thread was made to a comment made earlier where someone stated that they are not surprised seeing HP win because ATRL is a POP forum. So based on their comment they do make it seem as if LOTR is not mainstream. Anyways stop trying to shade me with your last comment and LOTR's audience is not as expansive compared to HP's, HP started off as a childrens book and built its way up as a series and pretty much anyone can read HP. LOTR is Teens and up.


You're right that LOTR is written a bit differently but while I read the book I felt not much was happening which is why I dropped from reading it.

LOTR is a masterpiece, the language, writing style and storytelling are brilliant. But with all those WWI and also partly WWII references, its not an easy book to read, not to mention how complex and complicated the metaphors are. While HP are childrens/family books, LOTR is definitely not. When someone reads it at young age, he will not fully understand the metaphors (for example when Frodo decides to leave Middle Earth, sails to Valinor => death/suicide, yet not... nothing is simple in LOTR, not even the concept of death)

I love both, but LOTR is superior in every way.

I wasn't shading anyone I was simply stating that the LOTR book are much slower and harder to understand than HP.A lot of people aren't up to that I wasn't talking to you or a reader of the HP books(heck I read them all myself).
