Hipsters? Lulz. Hipsters do NOT listen to Nirvana. Every music hipster I've met has talked my ear off about how the Pixies are way better and how I should be listening to them instead.

Both songs did major things for each artist, but "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is still pretty revered today, whereas "...Baby One More Time" is viewed as nothing more than a huge footstep in an annoying era of disposable pop music. Look at its recurrent airplay and its sales. I think I'll give Nirvana the edge here based on that, but both are pretty memorable.

1, many things were already stated in this thread
2, who really wants to know can easily find the receipts on net or by listening to alternative music
3, its just useless to talk about music and art with close minded and/or ignorant people.

As a fan of both I say Nirvana.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is a defining song for a generation of angst ridden teenagers and teens of the future. BOMT while good doesn't come close to Teen Spirit.

BOMT was iconic for Britney but it did not have the same impact in fact she released songs later on that surpassed it like Toxic.

Nirvana is not known to only hipsters or music snobs. If you went out a little more and opened your ears to music other than pop songs on your ipod and did some research you would see that Nirvana isn't local at all.

Just cause Britney came out with a song memorable in the 90s doesn't mean it was on the same level or better. Both have made great songs and i suggest some of you at least try to listen to Nirvana or look them up before making dumb statements.

Nirvana were very succesful in a commercial way which makes them non hipster material.
And they defined the decade.
Grunge defined Generation X and Nirvana defined Grunge.

although my alternative grunge roots force me to root for nirvana and kurt cobain but still britney was pretty huge as well

More iconic: Probably SLTS, but BOMT falls in the top five iconic songs of the 90s. It also has the video but that's another topic.

SLTS for me.

BOMT doesn't intrigue me like some Nirvana songs can or at least used to. Nirvana had greater impact too overall. To this day their music spawns countless fans, when Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have been dead for so long now.
