You are correct that vinyls degrade, but that's part of the allure. Pristine vinyls presumably carry perfect representations of the recorded music, and CDs do not.

That's only because you're choosing to rip it into a lossy format. iTunes supports ALAC imports, which preserve the initial CD quality. It's not a problem with the CD itself; a ripped vinyl is also dependent on the codec used, though a vinyl rip to any digital form technically loses data.
