REDLAND City could be in for name change, if only for a day.
Mayor Karen Williams has written to US pop star Pink asking her to join Redland City’s crusade to get its own service for victims of family and domestic violence.
The US singer tours Australia in July and August with several concerts in Brisbane.
Cr Williams wrote to Pink last week asking her to visit the Redlands to help raise awareness about domestic violence.
In her letter to the singer, Cr Williams said she would change the city’s name to Pinklands for a day and even rename the city’s annual festival Pink Fest, to be held on September 6 to 8, if Pink visited.
The letter also invited Pink to a recording session for a fundraiser album to collaborate with the city’s singers on a song and even have the star’s hit single Try, about domestic violence, featured on the album.
If Pink visited, Cr Williams said the singer would also be guest of honour at the album launch.
“Redland City would go all out to welcome your support for a domestic and family violence centre,” the mayor said.
“I could arrange for the Redlands to be called P!NKlands for a day.
“There is also potential for our annual festival, RedFest to be called P!NKFest, pink lights could shine on buildings for a night, shops could be asked to turn food or drinks pink, and schools could be encouraged to have out-of-uniform days and wear pink to support the cause."
Cr Williams was behind a push to get a domestic violence service in Redlands in March, when she wrote to Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Minister Tracy Davis asking for funding.
She told an International Women's Day function that month that domestic violence was an issue in Redlands, where Cleveland and Wynnum magistrates courts issued four per cent of the state's domestic violence orders in 2010-11.
Member for Cleveland Mark Robinson said the Working Against Violence Support Service would receive $41,708 a year for three years to provide a domestic and family violence court support service at the Cleveland Magistrates Court.
