Actually, they do have Hip Hop and R&B artists on the countdown... they're not that many, but they're there... Rihanna's #6 on the countdown and "Same Girl" by R. Kelly & Usher debuted 2 weeks ago. They've also had a number of R&B/Hip Hop artists make it to the top 20 these past few years: Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Akon, Joss Stone, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Nelly, Usher, OutKast, etc.
On the other hand; yes, one can say that TRL offers all popular genres (Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, R&B), but that doesn't mean that the countdown is varied. For example: There are rock videos on TRL, but what artists are there? FOB, MCR, Boys Like Girls... they all have similar styles. Where are Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Goo Goo Dolls, and Bon Jovi? All of them have videos out there right now; and while they're all in the VH1 Top 20, they're nowhere in sight on TRL. Can you really say TRL is varied when it comes to Rock?
Same with Pop. What pop artists are on TRL right now? Hilary Duff, Aly & AJ, J.T., etc. Pop artists in TRL are also pretty similar... they're either pop/rock or pop with some hip hop beats on them. Not that there's anything wrong with their music, but where are artists such as Michael Buble, Regina Spektor, Mandy Moore, and Five For Fighting, among others, which do softer, more A/C music? They are also pop artists, but you don't see them on TRL... Is that really variety?
You could even make a case that some R&B artists have been more successful in the VH1 Top 20 than on TRL. Only 3 Alicia Keys videos have made it to TRL, and two of them have her as a featured artist. On the other hand, almost all of her videos in 2004 made it to the VH1 Top 20, some of them even to the #1 spot. Also, how many times have Joss Stone, John Legend, and Prince made it to TRL lately? These are some of the best R&B artists out there now but you don't really see them on TRL...
Sure, TRL is more varied than the VH1 Top 20 when it comes to genres... there's always pop, rock, R&B, and hip hop videos on TRL (unlike the VH1 Top 20 which can sometimes be only pop and rock), but there isn't really much variety on TRL when it comes to artists and sub-genres... you do find that kind of variety on the VH1 Top 20.
