Bruno Mars Rejected for his Race
Quote:
Three years ago, Bruno Mars became a worldwide superstar with a string of smash hits. But before that, he struggled for years to make it, and reveals that one of the barriers to his becoming a pop star was his race.
Bruno is Puerto Rican, Jewish and Filipino. In the cover story of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, he says that when he and his songwriting partners came up with a song called "Nothin' on You," Bruno figured it was his ticket to the big time. But when he brought it to a music industry decision-maker -- a guy he won't name -- the reaction shocked him.
"He goes, 'Oh man, oh man, what a song,'" recalls Bruno. But then, he says the guy told him, "You know what kind of white artist we could break with this? Blond hair, blue eyes, we could make this kid the next thing!"
"It was just kinda sad," Bruno tells EW. "It was like, 'Man, what about the kid that played you the song and wrote it and produced it...what about that guy?'"
That experience, Bruno said, made him feel like a "mutant," and he says that was his lowest point. "Even with that song in my back pocket to seal the deal, things like that are coming out of people's mouths. It made me feel like I wasn't even in the room."
Thankfully, the story has a happy ending. "Nothin' on You" went on to become a #1 hit for Bruno and rapper B.o.B. It was nominated for three Grammys, and it launched Bruno on what's became one of the hottest pop careers of the decade.

From EW Magazine.
I am glad that he finally made it.
But eventually he had to sell it & he was lucky they used him as a feature on the song since he was unknown.

Mess @ stuff like this still happening in the music industry. Sadly it's probably far more common than we hear about.

Disgusting, there's still a lot of racism/bigotry in the industry

His situation with the general public's perception of his ethnic background kinda reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Elaine isn't sure if the guy she's dating is black or not.

And some people try to say racism/colorism in the industry doesn't exist...With that, It's great he was able to step past that a**hole and make it in this industry. Him being one of the most successful male artists of this generation is definitely an achievement and shows that his talent trumps all.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had tried to get this for Justin Bieber tbh It would have been perfect for him.

And he's a good looking, light skinned guy. Makes you think what else happens behind the scenes.

not surprised.
and it makes you wonder why a certain person who happens to have a constituency of followers who has the namesake of a certain figure forged from a lead free polyvinyl base, and a second person also has a constituency of followers who have taken the namesake of a highly sophisticated group of a high functioning organism with apiotic roots, whose vomit makes a substance of high viscosity, but can be used improve the taste of some foods, just so happens to have even lighter skin than usual.

You know I said it as a joke but when I really thought about it he really could have been talking about Bieber. It was around that time that Bieber had gotten signed, etc.

It's sad to hear about how racist the entertainment industry still is, but I'm glad he ended up being successful.

this screams scooter braun to me i dont even know why. this is so sad and im sure this happens everyday behind the scenes when it comes to the music industry which is so depressing since people always pretend like racism doesn't exist anymore when it obviously still does.

Every time when s*** like thsis happens I cannot believe that race actually matters when it comes to music. It's just beyond me, it really is. I think it's pretty irrelevant for thie audience but label directors put empasize on it. I'm really glad Bruno speaks openly about it. I wish to know those names.
Bruno faced a lot of rejection sinnce 2003, Firstly he lost his contract with Motown Universal, without even putting an album out. They just dropped him Later, he kept waliking from label to label and they kept saying he's sound is too unorthodox. I'm surprised he didn't give up.
BUT LOOK AT HIM NOW!
Those people must be fuming right now. They lost so many coins!!!
