Rihanna is definitely more of a pop artist than R&B but congrats to her anyway
Diamonds did slay the R&B chart for a long time so it is deserved

Why is there so much irony in these post though but let's be real just like soulful adele will be considered pop dance pop queens that are not Caucasian will and have been considered r&b unless they go all the way extreme a la penny kravitz.
I mean it is what it is. I'm glad she is tacking dem awards though. She works hard and had huge hits over thrower billboard year.

Billboard Awards are for SUCCESS in the last year.
Rihanna killed it with Diamonds last year on R&B charts.
She is still Top5 with Unapologetic.
That's why she is getting these awards.

Unapologetic is very on the fringe. It could definitely go to "urban contemporary" rather than "pop" at the Grammys next year.

And whilst Diamonds does sound more pop, Billboard decided to classify it otherwise.

I'm really happy for her success, but her 70% of her album or single are Pop, 20% R&B and 10 World Music (Reggae/Dancehall/Caribbean sound)/

Oh, I was in no way implying that she didn't win the awards fairly. Apologies if it came across that way.

It's just an odd choice for Billboard to categorize her in R&B when I don't really see any elements of that on her album. I find it a really interesting phenomenon that artists of color always seem to get slotted into "R&B" despite what kind of music they are actually making. It reminds me a lot of what Santigold had to say about it (her album was continually being listed under R&B, and the music she makes is FAR from that). She basically said that it's pretty racist to assume a black artist must be making R&B music. Here's the link for anyone who wants to read what she said:

It's very true that a lot of coloured artists get lumped into R&B despite what type of music they make, and that has happened to Rihanna a few times (remember Loud winning R&B/Soul at the AMAs?)

Unapologetic isn't pure R&B, but it IS very urban. I would personally classify "Lov7 Song" as an R&B track. So while the categorisation might seem very weird, or incorrect, there does seem to be some basis to this particular nomination. It's arguably her most R&B-leaning album since her first two.
