Glad you brought this up! 'Stay' is a song that has actually been able to make me cry! Its cathartic ability is unbelievable, very hard for a song to be able to do that. That's one of the reasons I love it so much.

Well yeah. Love has a "nice" side and its "dark" side, this song explores the dark side of love and expresses it in a painful way. A lot of songs feature people who are in love and therefore "happy", "willing" or "dreamy". But this song comes from the pain of already having experienced a history. It's so simple but it denotes a past but obviously a future in a present state of heartbreak. I'm so glad of its existence since most love songs express an idealistic therefore unrealistic side of love. The one that comes from the "euphoria" state of love. The part where you haven't lived yet the flaws of the person you love and you don't really know if you're going to be able to love that person after you really know them, because mostly when you're in love you think the other one is "perfect" but this song directly expresses how imperfect and harmful has been the person you loved, yet you still love that person.
That for me is sort of what people say is "unconditional" love. It's easy to love someone that only makes you happy but being able to love someone that has hurt you, being able to understand that person and still being able to love, that's a strong message.
