Discussion: Do authors have a bigger legacy than musicians?

I was thinking, successful authors have a really long legacy. Their books are passed down for generations, and re-imagined, re-interpreted, studied.

Shakespeare, Dickens, Christie, Blyton, Seuss, Tolkien, Carroll, CS Lewis, Dahl - these are just some of the many writers are remembered today, not only through books but also film, television.

It is almost certain that JK Rowling's work will be remembered more than - say - Madonna or even Michael Jackson.

We still listen to Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc. A lot of Renaissance composers and even medieval composers are remembered and used. So i'm not sure that's entirely true.

I'd say that they do leave a bigger legacy actually (if they really make it like J.K) but very few authors build up a legacy while there's a large handful of singers who have built legacy's.

I'm sorry but those people aren't as influential as the most renowned authors.

Most people wouldn't even know who wrote Symphony No.5 or Leck Mich im arsch unless they have some musical background.

Authors got the upper hand because presentation keeps on evolving from paper to theatre to TV to b/w to color to HD to 3D what's next 4D? Musicians could only get as far as their medium allows it. Even songs were use as a form to tell a story of heroes and their adventures. They even did it with radio.

The similarity with authors and musicians. They get left behind by the times. The difference, people will always remember the story of The Boy Who Lived instead of the girls who sang "Single Ladies", "Umbrella" or "Bad Romance". It's just the way it is.

I cant disagree more. Famous composers and virtuosi are studied, their works are re-interpreted and passed down for generations just like the works by famous authors. Their works are used in theatre, TV, movies and their lives are made into movies. Its a tie.
