RIAA: only streams originated in the U.S. are counted

For track certifications the RIAA counts streams only from services that compensate record labels. Among them are video services YouTube and Vevo and audio services Spotify, Muve Music, Rhapsody, MOG, Xbox Music and Slacker.
(for certification purposes, only streams originated in the U.S. are counted).

Bieber's "Baby," which has 3.9 million track sales and over 857 million views on Vevo, is now 12-times platinum.
|
How is that possible?
Let's assume half of those 857 million views are from the USA, that's 428.5 million views. With 100 streams = 1 sales, that the equivalent of 4.28 millio in sales.
4 million sales + 4.28 million equivalent in sales from VEVO/Youtube. It means the other streaming services (Spotify, Muve, Rhapsody, MOG, Rdio, Xbox, Slacker) have to amount to nearly 400 million streams.
Unless 75% of his VEVO/Youtube views are from USA only, I don't see how it is possible....

I was wondering this earlier when Billboard posted about it being 12x Platinum. Seems a bit fishy, but eh...

Also, for those that say this rule is bad or whatever,
100 streams generate about the same revenue to the music labels as 1 sales. That's why RIAA is doing this, especially since streaming revenue is about 8 months away from surpassing single track download in the USA.
Quote:
Year to date track sales are at 482.49 million, down 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (495.40 million).

Streaming Revenue 2012: $1,032.8 million USD (up 59%)
Singles Download Revenue 2012: $1,623.6 million USD (up 6.7%)

At the current 59% growth rate, Streaming Revenue for 2013 will be at $1,642 million.
At the current -3% growth rate, Singles Download Revenue for 2013 will be at $1,575 million.

This is what they are thinking:
300,000,000 streams = $2,100,000 ($0.007 royalties per stream)
3,000,000 sales = $2,100,000 ($0.70 royalties per sales)
Therefore, 100 streams = 1 sales
Certification
. a. The act of certifying. b. The state of being certified. 2. A certified statement.
RIAA is just catching up with the time. It's a streaming world. In case you haven't notice, Google just launched its version of Spotify. Apple and Amazon aren't far behind.

Yes okay. But separate the streaming and sales certifications then. It's pretty simple.
They ruined the system with this. Nobody is going to care about what platinum used to mean anymore.

As much as I agree with you about Streaming being the next 'it' thing, I have to disagree with you on this one.
Sales are sales. You bought the song, you own it. A subscription is 'renting' you may stream it but once you decided not to renew another year, you can't have the song anymore. That is the difference.
This is a completely irrelevant and stupid move to combine streaming and downloading since both are entirely different.
Why can't they just make some streaming certifications? Like 5Million Plays is Platinum on Streaming et cetera et cetera.
You OWN the song you downloaded. You DO NOT OWN the song you streamed. That's the difference for whatever profit it may give the Artists/Labels this is ******** and are two completely different things.

RIAA is mentally inefficient. I don't care if LTWYL would lose its 11x platinum certification, I just want this ******** mess fixed and I want it fixed now.
