I think 1 is a fine starting point for the novice Beatle fan, though I still stand by what I said prior. I wouldn't start them off with the anthologies, personally, but that's just me.

And I would never suggest The Beatles (a.k.a. The White Album) as a starting point for jumping into The Beatles albums. The double album is too long and too weird for someone new in my opinion.

Let's get one thing straight about The White Album: It is NOT too long. It may be too long for those with shorter attention spans, but it isn't too long in general. Could they have shaved off a couple of the tracks? Sure, I guess. But then, it wouldn't be The White Album.
As for the too weird argument...well, it is a bit weird, yes, but that shouldn't stop people who aren't acquainted with The Beatles from checking it out in the end.
If you want a more revised strategy, well, if you really aren't acquainted with The Beatles in any way, shape or form, then you have to start with 1. There's no other way to go. But, if you are familiar with them but want to seek out more of their stuff, THEN seek out The White Album and Sgt. Pepper's and the like.
